Following the launch of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit's Online Case Resolution (OCR) pilot on April 30th, more than 500 civil traffic cases have already been resolved without the need for drivers to appear in court.
With OCR, drivers who requested a court date for their civil traffic citations involving proof of insurance, driver’s license, or auto registration can simply upload the required documents from their cell phone, tablet or other Internet-connected device. A traffic hearing officer will then review the documents and dismiss the case if the documents are found to be in compliance.
Drivers who wish to participate in OCR for their eligible civil traffic citations must request a court date. Once they have received their notice of court appearance, they may follow the instructions on the notice for how to resolve their cases online via OCR.
Miami-Dade’s OCR pilot is part of a statewide Online Dispute Resolution project established by the Florida Supreme Court in June, 2019 to explore the use of technology in providing the public with quicker and easier access to the courts.
The Miami-Dade Courts are one of six judicial circuits selected in Florida to implement pilot projects involving various types of cases – such as small claims, or simple dissolutions of marriage – that were found to be suitable for online resolution. The pilots will inform plans for future expansion across the state.
