Profiles in Service: Judge Jose M. Rodriguez

Today’s Profiles in Service is dedicated to Judge Jose M. Rodriguez, who will conclude more than 30 years of judicial service when he steps down at the end of this year, closing this chapter of his legal career as the longest-serving judge in the Eleventh Judicial Circuit.

Born in Havana, Cuba, Judge Rodriguez came to Miami in 1961 and built an unconventional path to the law, working as a welder before earning his law degree from Indiana University. After establishing a general law practice, he was appointed to the Miami-Dade County Court in 1994 and elevated to the Circuit Court in 2000.

Over the past 30 years, Judge Rodriguez became widely respected for his decisiveness, clear and principled rulings, and ability to move cases forward fairly and efficiently.

Always one to embrace innovation, Judge Rodriguez suggested nearly 15 years ago that some hearings could take place remotely – long before this became commonplace after the COVID-19 pandemic served as a catalyst for courts to modernize the way certain hearings are conducted. Today, true to his suggestion long ago, remote hearings have brought about new efficiencies and have improved access and participation in the court system.

Aside from his many responsibilities on the Bench, Judge Rodriguez still found time to give back to his community by serving as adjunct professor for the University of Miami, Florida International University and Indiana University.

He has received many recognitions for his service and professionalism, including the Cuban American Bar Association’s Mario Goderich P.A.V.E.R. Award, which recognizes professionalism, achievement, values and excellence – qualities Judge Rodriguez has exemplified throughout his career.

While he is leaving the Bench, he is not retiring from the legal profession, as he will continue to teach and will join JAMS in January to serve as a mediator.

Judge Rodriguez has long been guided by the belief that change is inevitable and should be embraced. He leaves the Bench with a legacy of integrity, professionalism, and a tireless commitment to justice and public service.

The Eleventh Circuit is grateful for Judge Rodriguez’s longtime service and recently held a retirement celebration for him at the new Osvaldo N. Soto Miami-Dade Justice Center.

Please enjoy these photos from his retirement celebration and join us in recognizing Judge Rodriguez’s remarkable contributions to his community and the Miami-Dade Courts.
