Pretrial Justice Improvement Project Implementation Delayed Pending Further Guidance from Florida Lawmakers

In light of today’s announcement by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis of proposed criminal justice legislation to be presented during the upcoming legislative session, the Miami-Dade Courts and its project team members will be delaying implementation of the APPR Pretrial Justice Improvement Project pending further guidance from Florida lawmakers.

“Our pretrial justice improvement project focuses on public safety, and a key element of the project is that judges should be the determinants of whether or not an individual remains in jail on serious charges,” said the Honorable Nushin G. Sayfie, Chief Judge of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit, the Miami-Dade Courts.

“Since the proposed legislation also touches on release criteria for serious crimes, as well as monetary bond schedules, it is prudent to hold off on implementation pending further guidance from our state lawmakers.”
