Miami-Dade Courts Now Offer Website Navigation Help via Online Chat with Digital Assistant SANDI

The Miami-Dade Courts are proud to announce the addition of SANDI, a new, artificial intelligence-based digital navigation assistant, to our website user experience.

Those who visit the Miami-Dade Courts website will now be greeted by SANDI in an online chat window. SANDI can understand user requests in English and Spanish and can help web visitors find frequently requested information such as judicial directories, courtroom Zoom ID numbers and case information.

SANDI uses text-to-speech and voice command technologies, so those who are using an audio and microphone-enabled device can select the option to verbally ask a question rather than type.

In addition to 24/7 website navigation help, SANDI will also assist those who are representing themselves in divorces and related Family Division cases. SANDI can answer frequently asked questions about the Family Court Self-Help Program and direct users to the appropriate web pages for forms and instructions. If live assistance is needed, SANDI can connect the user to a paralegal or, if after hours, send a request to have a paralegal contact the user the next business day.

In the future, SANDI will support additional languages and assist with other court programs.

“We are excited to bring this artificial intelligence-based online chat feature to our website. This means our users don’t have to go searching through drop-down menus to find what they are looking for – they can just ask SANDI,” said Chief Judge Nushin G. Sayfie. “Technology helps us improve service to our community. We will continue to be innovative in order to give better access to justice to the people of Miami-Dade County.”

SANDI, short for Self-Help Assistant Navigator for Digital Interactions, was made possible by a federal grant from the State Justice Institute, in collaboration with the National Center for State Courts (NCSC) and Advanced Robot Solutions, which developed this artificial intelligence-enhanced digital assistant – also known as a “chatbot.”

“It is an honor for NCSC to collaborate with Florida’s 11th Judicial Circuit on this important project,” said Felix Bajandas, Principal Court Management and Technology Consultant for the NCSC. “Together, we are strengthening access to justice through the use of state-of-the-art technology that will more efficiently and effectively provide vital information to Self-Help Program users and all web visitors.”

“The Miami judicial system’s vision of using artificial intelligent multilingual avatar chatbots, working collaboratively with the live Self-Help chat team, is truly visionary and leading edge,” said Paul McManus, CEO of Advanced Robot Solutions. “This platform will help Miami’s constituents while at the same time improving customer service workflows – a win-win for everyone.”
